Are you a parishioner looking to make a difference helping others while making new friends?
Volunteers are needed to work in our Saint Vincent de Paul ministry that provides meaningful, hands/on, direct assistance to our neighbors in West Seattle suffering financial or other challenges, regardless of their personal faith commitment.
We visit our neighbors in their homes so we can hear their stories first, learn their needs, and provide them with assistance, spiritual support, referrals, or other support. The Society promotes community, self-sufficiency, enabling people to help themselves.
We have a wonderful network of volunteers and we need more volunteers. We would love to welcome you to our team!

‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brethren of mine, you did for me.’ Matthew, 25:40
Year after year, we hear this admonition in the Gospel of Matthew, and we know in our hearts that it is true, but do we truly know what we are being called to do? Most of us incorporate Matthew’s words in our daily lives, and we support those in need in our community with financial support, and services. But is this enough? For the members of the Holy Rosary Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP), Matthew’s words are truly a call to a much more personal action.
Your fellow parishioners working in this ministry provide meaningful, hands-on, direct assistance to our neighbors in West Seattle suffering financial or other challenges, regardless of their personal faith commitment. We visit our neighbors in their homes, so we can hear their stories first-hand, learn their needs, and provide them with financial assistance, spiritual support, referrals, and other support. Beyond merely providing for their needs, however, we demonstrate our own faith as Catholics, by practicing the love that Christ called on us all to show, as John tells us:
“Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.”
1 John, 3:18
Our services are as varied as the needs of our neighbors, and sometimes they are beyond what we can provide ourselves, but in those cases we are able to connect them to other organizations and in some cases, provide on-going case management services, through the staff at our regional offices. Whatever the needs of those we serve, our goal is to support them through their difficult times. This is in direct response to the call of Pope Francis:
“In imitation of our Master, we Christians are called to confront the poverty of our brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it.”
Pope Francis
What kind of help does our conference provide?
We affirm the dignity of the people we serve by visiting them in their homes, listening to their stories in a spirit of compassionate charity, praying with them, and offering our humble service.
We provide assistance with rent, utilities, non-perishable food, Safeway gift cards and gas cards, Target gift cards, bus tickets, prescription drug assistance, informational brochures about other organizations that provide assistance, and more.
Before Christmas we help several dozen families with extra food and gift cards so that parents can purchase presents for their children.
Who provides the funds?
Holy Rosary parishioners provide most of our financial support. Conference members stand outside the church with baskets after Mass the second weekend of each month. The Holy Thursday and Thanksgiving Day collections and Advent giving tree contributions also support our ministry. Families at Holy Rosary School also help us. Every dollar we receive is spent on the poor. We provide quarterly reports of our income and expenditures in the parish bulletin. Our conference has also benefited from generous bequests, memorials, and congratulatory honoraria.
New and prospective members are always welcome! If you are feeling a little intimidated about this ministry, that's normal. We've all been there! Rest assured that you'll be supported. An excellent training program will teach you the basics, and you'll accompany an experienced member on home visits until you feel comfortable leading a visit yourself. You'll grow spiritually as you see Jesus in the faces of the people you visit, and you'll come to a deeper understanding of the verse:
"It is more blessed to give than to receive."
Acts 20:35
