This sacrament has many names: Reconcilation, because it restores our relationship with God and one another; Penance, because it consecrates our repentance from sin; and Confession, because speaking our sins to a priest is an essential element of the sacrament.
Christ instituted the sacrament of Penance for all sinful members of his Church: above all for those who, since Baptism, have fallen into grave sin, and have thus lost their baptismal grace and wounded ecclesial communion. "Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God's mercy for the offense committed against him, and are, at the same time, reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins." (CCC 1422, 1446)
