Social Justice Commission

The Holy Rosary Social Justice Committee works to integrate Catholic Social Teaching into the parish expression of God’s love.  We do this through:  raising awareness of Catholic Social Teaching; promoting education and opportunities to practice the teachings; struggling with issues of homelessness, diversity, peace and nonviolence, respect for life, and care for creation.

It was started by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and is now being operated by Megan Vecchio. We accept donations of gently used safety equipment, please call Megan if you have any supply needs or donations.

Advent Giving Tree

Sherry Smith                                      sherry@holyrosaryseattle.org

Patrick Barredo                                  pbarredo@holyrosaryseattle.org

Each Advent season, a tree laden with Christmas wishes is on display in the church. Parishioners are invited to select a tag from the tree, purchase the gift on the tag, and return it before Christmas. The Giving Tree has benefited Providence Regina House, Noel House, St. Martin de Porres Men’s Shelter, Matt Talbot Center, Youth Care’s Orion Center, Elder Health Northwest, Catherine Booth House, and Toys for Tots to name a few. If you would like to help with organizing this wonderful ministry, please contact Sherry or Patrick.

Our Clothesline offers free gently used and new clothing to families in need. Volunteers can choose to either work on Tuesdays sorting and stocking donated clothing, or on Fridays helping families find the clothes they need.

The Clothesline is administrated by the West Seattle Helpline. Its main distribution center is at Hillcrest Presbyterian Church. In the winter of 2009, a satellite of the Clothesline may open in the Holy Rosary Parish Center!

Community Meal

Patrick Barredo                                  pbarredo@holyrosaryseattle.org

Community Meal serves hot meals for low-income neighbors. Held quarterly, several area churches and agencies are uniting to facilitate this marvelous meal that serves about 150-175 guests.  Help is needed to plan the meal and shop for groceries, set-up the hall, prepare the meal, serve, and clean-up. We also rely on parishioners to share home-made baked goods so that we can serve dessert to our guests!

Family Promise

Patrick Barredo                                  pbarredo@holyrosaryseattle.org

Family Promise is a social service agency that helps newly homeless children and their families by getting them off the streets and into a stable, supportive environment that moves them toward self-sufficiency. Holy Rosary is a part of Family Promise’s network of congregations and volunteers that provides community, temporary housing and food. Our guests are families with children who are referred to us by established social service agencies.  We can help a maximum of 14 people at a time.  All guests are interviewed and screened by a Director; they sign guideline agreements, various releases and health forms, and develop a personal plan of action.  Persons with serious psychiatric, medical, legal or substance abuse problems will not be accepted into the program and will be referred to other agencies.  We do not ask our guests to worship and do not attempt to convert them to any religion.

When it is Holy Rosary’s week to offer temporary shelter, we house our guests in the Parish Center. All of our trained volunteers can provide all meals (continental breakfast, bag lunches, and warm dinner), spend time in the early evenings with the families, and stay overnight.  During daytime hours the families will be transported to the Day Center site where staff will work with guests to find suitable living arrangements and explore job opportunities.

God's Green Earth

Green Team

Nancy Stillger                                    nstillger@gmail.com

Holy Rosary’s Green Team is made up of parents/parishioners, a teacher representative, a representative from the Parish staff, and students who all share a passion for caring for God’s creation, the Earth.  The Green Team hopes to reduce the impact/carbon footprint of our community.  The Green Team produces weekly green tips for the school’s Family Communication Envelope and the Parish Bulletin, initiates projects such as food waste composting, installing No Idle signs, Earth Day activities and Bike to School Month.

We follow the Catholic Social Teaching of Caring for God’s Creation.  “We show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.”

International Missions

Tim Law                                            timalaw@aol.com

The purpose of the International Missions Board is to provide short term exposure experiences for our parishioners and others in Third World and developing countries; to mutually exchange our gifts, talents and faith in Jesus Christ with the people we encounter; and to identify areas of need that we might provide resources. Our trips are about three weeks in duration. Since 1998 we have sponsored trips to Jamaica, Kenya, Uganda, and the Philippines. The school, parish and outside donors have helped to build schools, churches, medical clinics, water projects, medical equipment, computers, school supplies, school fees and more.

Lenten Pounding Tree

Patrick Barredo                                  pbarredo@holyrosaryseattle.org

Sherry Smith                                      sherry@holyrosaryseattle.org

Traditionally, when events called for celebration and gift giving (weddings, births, etc.), pioneers who were cash poor “pounded” the person with gifts such as a pound of sugar or a pound of coffee.  We set up our “pounding tree” on Ash Wednesday with “pounding tags.”  Items collected benefit St. Vincent de Paul and the West Seattle Food Bank.

Nursing Home Ministry

Paula Righi, ext 204                           vradel@holyrosaryseattle.org

Picture one of your fellow parishioners in a Nursing Home or Assisted Living facility in West Seattle. Her family lives far away. He seldom or never has an outside visitor. Perhaps you could be that visitor! Are you able to give two or more days of your month to a new friend? Call Paula if you would like to help.

Orion Center

Odd months:

Grace Fosado, 933-7465                   grace.s.fosado@gmail.com

Even months:

Bill Lenth, 938-8115                          bclenth@quidnunc.net

The Orion Center is a multi-service facility for homeless youth ages 12-21 with limited services for youth ages 22- 24.  It provides immediate and developmental services such as case management, health education, the Orion School (an on-site Seattle Public School), food and clothing banks, and adventure-based therapy.  The center is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm. Hundreds of volunteers continue Orion Center's collaborative spirit by lending their time and expertise to help this vulnerable population grow up. More than 350 volunteers from churches, homes, and organizations provide hot, home-cooked dinners for youth at the Orion Center five nights a week.

There are two groups of Holy Rosary parishioners who share the responsibility of providing dinner for the youth. Each group purchases groceries, cooks and prepares the food, and then brings the meal downtown for the teens. On even numbered months Bill Lenth’s  group provides a meal on the first two Thursdays of the month. Grace Fosado's group prepares a meal on the second Thursday of odd numbered months. If you are interested in finding out more about feeding homeless teenagers, contact Bill, Grace or the Parish Office.

Soup Kitchen

Bill Lenth                                           bclenth@quidnunc.net

Twice a month volunteers prepare gallons of homemade soup for the Lazarus Day Center. There are many ways that parishioners can participate: prepare broth or base in your own home, join the “soupers” in the kitchen on soup days, or pick up and deliver insulated soup containers to and from the shelter on soup days. For further information please contact Bill.

Hospitality

Liz Verdier                                         1eav@comcast.net

Our shelter is open each Sat. and Sun. night with two trained volunteers (women or couples) staying with our guests. Volunteer drivers (male or female) transport the guests from Noel House (where they are screened) in the evening and return them in the morning. Hospitality volunteers also provide a healthy “snack” in the evening. To make this ministry work we need lots of volunteers (we train!). Please consider helping house those who have no homes!

Funeral Receptions

Maureen Blake                                   mblake620@clearwire.net

A rewarding and meaningful ministry in which volunteers help set up, serve and clean up for receptions following funerals. We try to keep a fairly large list of volunteers so that no one is called on too often. If interested, contact Maureen Blake.
